About Karolina Adamczak

During this residency, Karolina displayed a selection of scenes from her recent film The Death of The Death, 2023. She also presented some initial research material for her current project, The Life of The Death, consisting of raw video footage as well as some early writings and notes.

The Death of The Death, 2023, is a three-screen installation that presents an alternative reality where a cure to death has been invented and as a result, humans have become immortal. The work opens with a scene of a person from this alternative reality whose voice narrates the rest of the work, telling us what has occurred and its consequences. The work then follows with everyday scenes of the past life where people were still mortal, or better said: life as we know it now. The Death of The Death presents a theory that with the advancement to immortality, we would lose our capacity to feel, as our feelings are structured around the temporality of our lives. The work defends the importance of death.

The Life of The Death which is currently under investigation, aims to explore our true reality which consists of living with death, and what it means to face it. The project looks at questions which include; the presence vs the absence that death creates, the loss of ourselves with the death of someone close, and dissociation from our bodies from the loss of someone with whom we had a physical relationship. Ultimately, the project does not see death in a totally negative light. One of the main messages behind the work is the idea that when we experience the death of someone close, we can take refuge in the fact that we will die too.
